This site should help you get start, you can ignore the parts about quark, and just use WC if you are comfotable with it. I frankly never liked WC (EVIL EVIL APPLICATION).
only problem with that process is the output map file contains way to many faces than necessary. And when you build your shape in 3dsmax, you must take care not to have any concave polys.
