The path to the hosts file was slightly wrong, I've just corrected it, it should be C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, or more generally:
wherever your windows is installed \ system32 \ drivers \ etc \ hosts.

If these don't exists, you can always do file search for files named hosts.

It's a text file which can be opened in notepad for example, you just add another line and save it.

It works for Linux. I was able to login but... discovered something worse than the Master Server being down. The sight of no players in any of the Servers available! daaah!
