Since i am new to editors that use brushes and static meshes and the like and didn't make any sort of custom interiors for T2 i was looking for some general guidelines on when to use them or when not to. I watched 1/3 of the training videos thus far on my UT2k4 CD and they haven't really used any large static meshes yet.
So basically i'm wondering if making a tribes base is best done using static meshes or using brushes. From what i hear T:V doesn't use static meshes (or very little of them) in current maps. Also does making a base as a static make it more reusable?
Actually, there is quite a lot of mesh used for bases.
There is no hard rule on this. A lot can be done with BSP.
BSP = done in TVed
Mesh = done in modeling program like maya, max, lightwave, etc
As a general rule, BSP is good for bigger, simple shapes and mesh is good for details and more complex shapes.
BSP handles complex lighting more nicely and is best for larger indoor structures.
Mesh can be used for anything BSP is used for, but can have trouble with detailed lighting.
Mesh is also ideal for shapes/things that repeat. Static mesh load into memory and render VERY QUICKLY, so that's why things like trees and tiny repeating details are best done as mesh.
Roughly speaking, in Tribes2... DTS was mesh. DIFs were BSP.
However, in TV we have weapons with more polygons than entire bases in T2.
YOU DONT NEED MESH to make maps. You will just become tremendously empowered if you learn a modeling program to supplement skills with BSP. Otherwise you'll be limited in what you can do, although you can also rely on the large amount of cool mesh already in the game for adding details.
