when u strarting out with the terraformer use smaller brushes and smaller settings in the options menu hit o to open the options in the terraformer set adjust hieth to 1 i ven go as low as 0.1 for specific details. also use smooth with the paint function with a size 1 or 2 brush highers size brushes smooth less
You can adjust the size of the smooth brush as well by clicking on settings on the left side and entering a smaller number. It defaults to 50, and I find 30 works pretty well.
I also use the "adjustheight" option as Sparky has suggested. This gives you very fine control over every detail. It is very time consuming though, I know I've spent way too much time adjusting my terrains.
