As long as you can get it to a 256x256 gray scale image, sure.

not really.. the heighfields use greyscale... as a Bmp I believe.. it merely tells the terraformer that lighter means higher and darker means lower.. I think.. or is it the other way around.. I did one before but I didnt blur it and the dang mountains were jutting up into the sky.. so when you make your dem, blur it so it is smoother.. or it will be really craggy.. : )
