Well, I'll avoid silly bickering if folks don't take stuff so damn personal around here.
As for milkshape and blender... I'm happy folks have found plugins for them (sounds like a simple search of blender website was all that was required).
However, I'm telling ya... believe me or not... you're not gonna have full functionality of a program like maya. I've been modding/mapping on unreal for 2 years now and deep in the scene, and have never... ever seen anybody using these.
Before you invest so much time/effort holding onto ms or blender (and even picking fights about it), I'd strongly advise merely picking up Maya PLE which is 1) free 2) high end professional software 3) very well supported for doing unreal engine stuff.
Of course... you are all free to ignore that advice, but there will be several "i told you so"s down the road.
It's very simple: get to .ase format.
You'll likely have serious problems with multiple textures. Hopefully not.
FYI, there seems to be one tutorial for the blender exporter.

Again, I'd strongly advise learning maya instead of using milkshape/blender.
Check the date on that. Milkshape and such are great for getting your feet wet in modeling. Surely you can do a lot with them, but you'll VERY quickly find out that the application of them for other usage is very limited. It's really not something to start a silly flamewar about or deny.
No need to be lazy... scared... Maya PLE won't bite and is rather easy to use (ive been both lazy and scared myself around learning modeling programs myself... so i know it when i see it).
One thing: I was trying to avoid a flame war here, note my inclusion of a sperate place where it would be much less distruptive .
Tse: Uh.. MS? Wha? And I'd rather use Blender for at least the beginning (nowish) so that I don't have to learn to use 2 programs at once, and can focus on one at a time. I beileive I've already sated that, but it seems that half of what I say goes unnoticed. Meh, whatever.

hrm. What happens if I want to have a mirrored map? (same bases), different locations. Would I be able to copy and paste the unsubtracted stuff I make to another location? or would it be smarter to use maya?
How big/small should an interior be if you're gonna use maya?
If you're going to mirror everything you should be able to without an issue - I haven't looked, but I assume Select Actors or Select All is still in the Editor, which basically means you size the "Builder Brush" around everything you want to Select then do a Select, then a copy... now, whether you can rotate it or mirror it perfectly is another story..
As far as sizes, I'll let TseTse comment, since he has been working with it a bit more.. The best answer I can give is experiment in Maya with different sizes of walls or boxes and import them and place them in a Map and then place a Character, then you can have some manner of scale...
getting scale right is initially a pain in any modeling proggy.
my advice is to start with a simple box. this is also good practice for making the process seem easy.
make a box. scale it up by "2s" (i.e. 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, etc).
at each step, go through the process of exporting to UED and see how it looks placed next to a Character.
you can definately, easily change the scale of a mesh in UED (although it isnt as easy in TV as it is in other games cuz they removed some stuff... god know's why).
but while you can change the scale in ued if the mesh is way too small, id suggest taking the time up front to try to get a box in maya to export to be roughly "player side" in ued so that you can make stuff in there naturally.
