Eyecandy VS FPS

This is a tough one because hardware constantly changes... I say go for the eyecandy (but if you don don't make the visible distance too large). I hold this view because even if some people have crappy hardware now, their hardware isnt going to get worse, and by this time next year few will worry about their framerate in T2.

Actually, this is a little different. I interpreted the other poll as question of which is more important...a map with good gameplay or a map that looks good.

Eye candy versus FPS is slightly different, though poor FPS will negatively impact the play experience. Unfortunately, one of the biggest impacters seems to be visible distance...when playing with Insurgence, I found that removing all the 'eyecandy' basically did zip to improve the framerate...the offenders were visible distance and objects with triggers [like turrets, sensors, and i-stations]. The interiors [especially without the LODs] were a very close second.

Again, nobody thinks that gameplay is anything other than the top priority...it really a matter of what you find acceptable, especially in regards to framerate.

A DTS shape is just that...a shape. The only way a turret knows to fire on you is because it's basically performing a container search at a set interval...likewise with sensors. Try it with a map sometime...look at your base [with the framerate counter on] and then delete all i-stations and everything...everything except the interior. The only thing is, when you run a map like that, YOU are the server...triggers probably don't have the same impact on true clients, since the client isn't performing all the checks and searches. Now, wether a large number of triggers does indeed negatively affect all connected clients...well, there's only one way to test that .

i'll test this on a dedicated server.

the radius search of a turret and the trigger system on an iventory just work differently. i'm just hoping that triggers aren't causing lag or fps drops.

I may be putting my foot in mouth but here goes: granted triggers use some cpu time but not much. The number of objects, viewable distance, large scaled objects seem to be the biggest fps hogs out there.
