The problem with using waypoints is that the bots will be very redundant. In a game like Half Life where you only visit an area once in the game, it is great. But unless you want to do some serious ai scripting, (like write a script that picks a random number, and bot will act differant depending on the number) you will get people that say "that bot is stupid walking in the same path all the time". Bots that are defending by default will "StepIdle" around the %taskkLocation. If you mess with the numbers in the "aiObjectives.cs" file. You could get them to do more. But keep in mind that Bots by default don't have to many choices of weapons and their range to attack sucks. But they do Defend against vehicles very effectively if you give them a "Missilelauncher" or tell the bot to buy the "MediumMissileSet" by default. I say "By Default" because if you do not edit the "aiInventory.cs" file your bots will be "Default". If you do edit the file you could give them more choices in weapons and edit the range to use them. Once a bot is "Engaging an enemy" they do act pretty realilisitic I think. But the only weapons by default that they can use over 80 meters is the "SniperRifle" and ("MissileLauncher" for vehicles and only in the defendlocation objective).
If you do decide to script a new "AIODefendLocation" I suggest you take a look at the "AIOFlagObjectives" that one has some serious scripting in there. Maybe you could make a new AIOObjective with Bots that patrol like the US Marines
NOTE: Any thing can be done if you put your mind to it.
has anyone found a way to "make" a custom path for a bot to follow? Like maybe a capper path, or base raper path?

If you write it into the scripts. The Bots will by default avoid lava, water and big turrets if the weight for the objective is not to high. But keep in mind if you force the bot to follow a path. Player (real people) will get used to it in like 2 bots. And they will stand and wait in the spot for them to come and kill em. I know cause I tried it once, didn't like it. What you really need is a script that picks a random path to target. Bots go straight from spawn point to inventory and straight from inventory to objective. If you spread out the spawn sphere/inventories you get some what more randomness in their paths.
The bot already take almost a direct path to it's objective. Unless it was diverted to another place on the map it goes directly to it's objective an players can waite anyways!
Cool, gonna have to try that.
I sometime place a defend location at the enemies flag just to keep up the harrasment an keep the game interesting. Plus the bot defending that location will GRAB the flag if there..
