3DSMAX is for modeling. You want a photo/picture editor for textures. Textures are just pictures, in our case they need to tile easy. You can use MSPaint, PhotoShop, PaintShop or even Wally to make textures. They need to be in demensions that are powers of 2.

Use Wally to put them into a .WAD to use in WC.

i personally dont create my own wad, i add my textures in an existing wad (ice, lush, desert, lava etc) cuz i use most of the out-of-the box textures. if i create a "peachy" wad i have to add a lot of the exisiting out of the box textures in it, that's why i dont do it.
