Use the base maps as a guide. As long as each side as the same basic features it shouldn't be a problem. What you need to worry about is balance between offense and defense.
[Edit: As far as roads, just play around with the terrain tools. Make sure to set the adjustment rate to 1m or less. Just keep on messing around till you see how things work out.]
