I'm better at terraforming than I was two weeks ago but not as good as I shall be in two more weeks.
I find the Filter and Sinus tools to be extremeley powerful.
Filter let's you raise or lower specific parts of the terrain globally. Radical differences from one control point to another on your filter graph equate to radical differences in your terrain features. Likewise, gradual differences from one control point to another equates to gradual changes in your terrain.
I use Sinus plus Blend to roughen up my terrains before I use filter. Sinus seems to raise and/or lower various levels of the terrain simultaneously. On the one hand, it raises and lowers various aspects of your original fractal, canyon, or multifractal (or combo), but on the other hand, it creates "bumps" all over the place. (For lack of a better term. =\ ) I can't say I'm as comfortable with Sinus as with Filter, but if I make some bumps and then blend it into my previous work at about 10%, it generally roughens up the terrain, giving it a more natural look.
I hate Turbulence. A find that it only makes my terrain unrealistic. If you've found a way to use it well, I'd love to hear about it.

i found sinus to be beastly, i still dont know what im doing, but i always end up with cool terrain

That's the beauty of the terraformer - even if you haven't a clue, you can still come up with a good terrain by accident...
