what i generally do is make a hieghtfield in Word then tweak it in paint. import it, then play with sinus/smoothing/fractals then maybe even filter it. just play around - you'll get what you want in the end

ahh yes. importing a greyscale.png as a terrain. quite the nice tool. i've been using it for my terrains lately.

if you didn't know already. each pixel should be about 1 terrain sqare. and the brighter the pixel is the higher it will be. so like dont put a pixel thats like 188 188 188 in color beside one thats like 33 33 33 or you will get preaty bad surfaces.

after you done your bitmap you should use the blur and smudge tool to make the bitmap pixels look preaty smooth something like the attachment.

Then when your in the game if the terrain is all like little spikes then use the thing that klumsy bot said.
