Well that is shit.. i never knew that, i dont understand why it does that though. For instance a serverside map can have a load picture, but the game cant download a 256*256 or whatever size, heightmap? Thanx for answering my question, but i think that the last patch should have changed that. Seriously thats total BS.

nah.. see, the loading pic will only appear if the client has actually downloaded the map.. otherwise, they'll get the default picture. (Of the bloodeagle guy) This is 'cause the loading picture doesn't actually transfer.

Plus, the terrain file isn't just a 256x256 bitmap.. it's a file that contains the actuall terrian (the 3-d representatoin) data, plus the texturing data. The 256x256 heightfield is used (if at all) only in generating the file.

Take a look at some of the .TER files in base/terrains.. and you'll see the size of them.

You're right on one account, tho'.. it is a shame that auto-download wasn't supported. But that's a very un-dead horse, it's been killed so many times.. therefore, I shan't beat it.
