UE in the editor
There have been numerous posts on UE workarounds in the T2 in game Mapping forums. Too many to list here.
Here is a summary of things that I do to eliminate UEs:
1. Fire up Tribes once for each map you want to work on. In other words, do not edit one map, leave game, then fire up another map to edit. Quit Tribes 2, then restart it if you want to work on another map.
2. Use "Relight" function frequently.
A. Relight after you place an object into which you might put other objects; e.g. bases, bunkers, towers, etc.
B. Relight after you have placed an object into which you will then enter while play-testing.
C. Relight after re-opening the editor after play-testing.
I rarely get UEs anymore. There are some other suggested workarounds that I have not tried. Again, browse the in game Mapping forum for lots of helpful material on the subject.
Hmmm, the only way I have found to get rid of virtually all UE's was this;
1. Copy the Tribes2.exe from the CD to your tribes2/gamedata/ folder and rename it to something else. DO NOT overwrite your existing Tribes2.exe! I renamed mine to tribes2editor.exe
2. Copy the file "ifc21.dll" from the cd and place in the same directory. Overwrite it if there already is one.
3. Make a new shortcut for editing that points to the new renamed Tribes2editor.exe file, and add to the command line; "-nologin"
4. Run the game and edit away!
-note: If you are running client side scripts, you may experience problems with this method, as some of them will interfere with the old .exe file. I have two installations of T2 on my HD, 1 for playing, and 1 for editing. If you install it twice, MAKE SURE you DON'T update the installation you are going to use to edit, as one of the many patches "broke" the editor and that is the reason you get all those UE's. The relighting thing never worked for me, so this is how I edit now.
...
The die is cast, the fat is in the fire, and if the Grim Reaper wants to come on like Jesus, so be it.
Sorry, I have to disagree with the second install of T2 idea.
It is much, much easier to set your drop to to "Ground", make sure you are looking at the sky and are not where the object will appear. (I prefer to move my view some distance up in the air from the ground.) Then place your object and hit relight. After this I am OK to move the object around at will.
The only pain is that this technique will make all of the objects appear at the center of the map.
I did find that I can save alot of time if I copy an object, and following the same routine above (look at the sky and relight) do a paste. The pasted object appears right next to the one I copied.
One unusual thing I noticed was that if I am placing walls (only) and I do a copy and paste while setting my drop to to camera, that I don't get a UE if I relight the mission. (Even though I appear to be in the center of the wall.)
It seems that the UE is related to textures being put on the screen within view... I experimented a little and found that as long as I am not looking at the object when it is created I do not get a UE.
I even went as far as creating one of every DS bridge piece (I wasn't sure which one's I wanted and there are like 10) one after the other and then I did a relight... I thought for sure I'd give myself a UE, but it worked fine... Was able to select the pieces I wanted and then just copied em till I was all set.
I never get ue's... I relight after each time i place an object within and interior like a base... placing objects outside is okay but you have to relight after you start working inside.
