rain problems

i've been looking around weather.cs and i was wondering how the rain works. It seems that the rain falls from an infinitely distant point from the player. I was wonderin how to make the rain fall from a specific height (like a cloud layer) then, after that, make the rain truncate when it hits something solid.

i know that water stops rain/stops it from being seen. i also know that portal zones stop rain too. what i'm trying to do is similar to the fireball thingie where the rain starts from a specific height and stops when it hits buildings/terrain and stuff.

be similar to the fireballs - just make it stop at the ground/shape. BUT each fireball is a discrete object, the rain isnt. people are gonna complain that the game will be slowed down by each rain droplet being an object unless i can alter that (make the rain smarter)

btw, rain isnt "displayed" underwater... where does it set that?
