do you have to snap everything to a grid?

Must everything you do like carving and sucks snap to the grid using WC? I want to go beyond and make neat carvings of faces maybe. But I'm not sure.

'Tho it can be the smallest grid.. that'll give you some room to work.

Possibly you can....I tried it and I got errors like crazy, but that was when I was new to WC and hadn't a faintest clue about what I was doing... 
HOWEVER I am going to attempt this again when I have time, but not exactly a statue, more like a relief.

Yes.. never work without the VE. I now regret the many, many frustrating days I spent without it.. scared of it.. I now do the same tasks in about 1/10th of the time! W00t!
