When I did my first try-it's using the badlands interior textures there was no problem, all worked fine.
So I commenced work on a real project, using the lush interior set (removed other wad, using only the lush wad) and now sometimes on the palette I see a lot of textures (in the lush set) and sometimes I don't (no, this is not the "used" list but the full list while showing the lush wad only).
And while selecting and using those works when texturing, the compiler hangs when it hits one of those, can't find it. When I avoid those the int compiles fine, tests fine, works fine in game.
WC and Tribes2 are installed in default directories exactly as instructed. The setups are exactly as in instructions. Between tutorials there is a disagreement as to where the "warcraft" dir goes, in the dynamix folder or the tribes2 folder, so I tried both with no change.

Which is not a whole lot 
but what I got into the habit of doing when I had that problem was close hammer all together everytime that I changed wads. When I did not, it would hang up on the previous wad sometimes and show both which would cause a hang-up or error when I attempted to compile errors like
cant unzip
or find wad

allwads.wad is available on the prefablab thingwhatsit... haven't downloaded it myself, but it's a wad of all the tribes2 base textures (plus nulls). Thing you need to remember, if you choose to use it, is that you'll have to include every texture you use in the map .vl2 file. You can't just expect the wad to direct tribes to each of the 5 wads (lava ice badlands lush desert)... so if you used every base texture in your map it would be up to 15mb or something (my guess).
