There are so many options available, any are good. I suggest just grabbing something from the local library, because c/c++ syntax hasn't changed all that much. You may want to learn C then upgrade to C++ (C++ removes some rules and has extra features like classes and overloading that you probably don't need stuffed down your throat while you're first learning it).

Also, remember that these books usually deal with console applications and the basic control structures and data manipulation techniques. They do not teach you anything specific to a type of software (ie games, or game scripting), so further studies would be required to expand your knowledge.

Ok if you really want to learn c++ and are willing to spend $150 I know a very good place to go.



3dbuzz is a video training web site and the guy does very good job at teaching things. If you register which is free there are a lot of VTMs (video training models) that you can watch that will show you how to use programs such as Maya, 3ds Max, and a lot more for free. C++ is the only one that I know of that he charges money for.

Here is where you can get it

There are 5 cds and its about 18 hours long.

If I were you I would download a couple of the free VTMs and get a feel for what the VTMs are like.
