Larger terrains?

well, basicaly everything about the game is based on it's position on the terrain appearently. If you set a square empty for an underground base, this repeats itself indefinately. The same goes for lightning. As for spawning, the spawngraph will not work outside of the original terrain block, but you could....
Try placing spawnspheres inside of the mission area, and then place a teleporting zone directly underneath them. Enclose this entire thing in an area underground inside of a building or high in the air so that it wont be visible on the surface. The teleporting objects should work outside of the area as far as you want.

Another idea, you could maybe (improbable) try stacking the terrains so that there was one on top of the other, but about 2000m between, and make a teleporting zone inside of some building so that you could teleport to another dimension or that sort of effect.
