Capture the Flag Lush Clear Client Side Custom Textures Custom Shapes
Well, after being laid off my job a few weeks ago I have found some free time to start mapping and prefabing again. So, here is my first T2 map with my own custom interiors. Don’t let the pics on this page fool you, the main base itself just might be the largest interior built for Tribes 2 yet, maybe. Let me start out be telling you all a little about each interior. The main base consist of a castle, two huge bunkers on the front beach, a hanger for flying vehicles only in the sea cliff, a motor pool for land vehicles only under the castle and all these are connected underground by a network of tunnels and rooms. At the fare North and South of this map are two different types of suspension bridges that connect the two landmasses. At the ends of both bridges is a team bunker that has a secret back door entrance where you will find the bunker generator. Each teams main base interior faces the enemy separated by a body of water. Be careful, the front of these main bases is heavily defended so a simple jump-fly across the body of water may not be the safes way to go. Also, you’ll find it hard getting a tank up the steep sea cliff walls so I recommend using the passes and bridges. Remember, I have been away from mapping for some time now and this map may be a bit rusty. However, it’s been play tested time and time again and I think most of the bugs have been worked out (keeping fingers crossed). One more thing, for some reason this map takes quite a while to load so give it time. I’m not sure if I am building the vl2 file right or not. If you have problems getting it to load simply unzip the vl2 file using Winzip into your base folder. That seams to fix the load problem for me. Anyway, hope you enjoy it. Expect to see more from this dinosaur of T2 mapping.
Oh yeah, if anyone is looking to hire a 3D game artist or Reliability Engineer, send me a bite on my email. I sure could use a paying job right about now.

Nasty load time, likely due to the size and number of interiors (lighting), but this is a joy to play. I suspect that some LODs, texures, and portals could be tweaked around the v-bay. That said, this is a really nice T2 map and brings to life the kind of gameplay which people on the pubs seem to appreciate... VERY well done. I particularly appreciate the care that went into the terrain and the design of the flag room exit/entrances. I could go on and on... Kudos.

by CleverClothe on June 11, 2002 Permalink · Rating:Excellent interiors. I love the under works of the bunkers, the entities REALLY add to the ambience. Excellent lighting (though in some of the halways the while lights need to be toned down, and a few of the exterior lights are missing.. well, light). But these could REALLY REALLY REALLY use vehicle collision entities (and LOD's if you haven't done so). This will help alot with the lag. The reason I am not posting my grade now (which is currently a "C") is because there is a major flaw that I need to know if it is intentional. Both the main generators of both teams are non-destroyable. They are so far embeded into the wall that they cannot be damaged. Is this intentional???

by metaltank on June 11, 2002 Permalink · Rating:Besides suffering from a poor name, this has got to be the coolest map I've seen in a long time. Maybe the coolest ever! If I could, I'd grade it Ultra-Mega A++! The interiors are simply amazing and HUGE! So huge that they may draw comparisons to a level from Quake (1, 2, or 3...take your pick) or Unreal. Some may consider that a negative but I think it's pretty damn sweet. If this is your first attempt at building custom interiors, I might as well stop building because this far surpasses anything I've done or can envision doing. I can't think of a better custom interior built by anyone, including the dev team. Not to be outdone, the map itself is quite nice. I particularly like the high yet rolling mountains. Reminds me a bit of Archipelago only with larger land masses. The map does take a while to load but it is worth it. I can't really comment on lag attributed to the interiors as I run a fairly beefy machine. Once loaded, it ran beautifully for me. Well, I've blathered on long enough. If you haven't downloaded it by now, seek psychiatric help because you need it in a big way.
In regards to CleverClothe
by EEPROM on June 11, 2002 Permalink · Rating:In regards to CleverClothe comments,
I’m sure there were more things left out of these interiors then just LODs and a few lights. I never claimed to be any type of expert when it comes to WC. However, I do feel that what I have produced in just a few weeks without any teachings form WC masters is nothing more then astonishing. Like I said before, this is my first fab for T2 and most likely will have many FPS problems on lower end systems. I also mention that my next map with custom interiors will be much better since I am learning about how to build interiors for the Torque engine. If anyone out there would be interested in giving me a few lessons about LODs I would appreciate it (ICQ# 48933846). Never the less I’m sure I will figure them out after time. This map was more of a learning experience for me then a masterpiece to be judged and rated (although I don’t mind that it received a few A ratings). One thing I do want to point out is how I used portals on the exterior entrances, how they project shadows of exterior light sources better then most I have seen in the past (one simple improvement).
As for the main base gens, I forgot to mention that they could only be destroyed with a direct shot from a Chain gun (ooops, sorry).

I like the "secret" back entrance to the North and South bunkers; that is a very long shaft! The terrain is PERFECTLY done and i like it alot. the base could not have been done better - I might've thought it was Akira's! The base works great with the terrain too, and the air vehicle bay looks like something out of Star Wars =). You must give me some design tips for WC - my bases always turn out either small and excessively detailed, or large and bland. Anyway I'll shut up for now... Great job EEP!

1) the corridors that leads from the shoreline to the bunkers is underwater on one side (cant remember what team) dunno if this was intentional; if it was the water doesnt show up. also, the air ducts that go from the Vpad to the gen room are pitch black when the power is off and its really hard to find your way out. same with the ones in the bunkers when the power is off. just minor things that are more annoying than serious problems..other than that its amazing and i would give it an A+ again if i could ^_^
What an impressive base. It
by Killin is fun on June 14, 2002 Permalink · Rating:What an impressive base. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it is also built in a way that it's complexity is not a hindrance to the offense. I love how many entrances there are. The small hole in the floor of the aircraft bay opens into a system of ducts that allow access to the base generators. This ensures that the defenders will have a lot to think about, while the small opening will make it hard for attackers to get in when they're under fire.
The flag also has multiple entrances, which will make it easier for cappers and flag clearers to do their jobs. All in all, the main base is the best designed base I've seen. It promises to promote the kind of indoor combat seen in Recalessence, while maintaining a good flow of gameplay that will allow flags to be capped.
I didn't see much use for the two bridges. Both were a considerable distance away from the main bases, and were hard to get to. I couldn't find any road that would allow an MPB to reach the bridge, but I didn't look too hard. There seems to be very little advantage to using the bridges as opposed to a frontal assault.
I would love to play this map on a huge server. It would definately make Tribes 2 worthy of its description, 'Team combat on an epic scale.'

In response to Deathscythe~40
by EEPROM on June 15, 2002 Permalink · Rating:In response to Deathscythe~40’s comments, in regards to the team bunkers at the ends of the bridges, those lower tunnels where the gen is, it was intentional that I placed them low enough so that you would get the water physics and sound effects while making your way to then gen. Almost like the floor is wet and mossy. If you look real hard at the floor you will see that the texture I used is of mossy material too, so that was planned. I also did not want the water to show cause waves in that tunnel would have look silly, I just wanted the sound and physics of the water. In regards to the duct system in the main base and being too dark when the gens go down, that was planned too. There was one thing I was totally trying to achieve while building these models that I have not seen yet in any interiors in T2 and that was when the gens go down its going to get dark, real dark, more realistic. It also forces you out of the duct system after blowing the gens, one small price to pay. However, I did notice that at lower video settings, mostly pertaining to the shadow details, when set lower the interiors become much darker. One more thing I have learned from this map.
In response to Killin Is Fun
by EEPROM on June 15, 2002 Permalink · Rating:In response to Killin Is Fun’s comments, there are roads that lead from the Motor Pool to both bridges and its quite easily traversed using a MPB. These roads are kind of like the back roads is Sanctuary. Believe it or not I still have not figured out how to paint parts of the terrain using the paint function in the terrain editor. To me it seems that the paint function doesn’t work at all, so I left the roads with a grassy texture, my bad. However, if you take the road that leads to the non-support suspension bridge, on your way you will pass a blown out bunker. This is where I like to set up my MPB on the enemy side since it makes a good base away from base position for your team. And Knell is right, be careful of those down side hills while maneuvering the MPB. If your not careful you will find yourself creaming down the side of those steep sea wall cliffs. But then again, I love rolling MPB.

by Ingolifs on June 17, 2002 Permalink · Rating:Wow. This map brings back memories of Scarabrae, albeit underground. mainly because of the big rooms, the winding ducts, the Vehicle chute and the ability to destroy the gens with a shrike (yea, it's possible)
As I'm the judging perfectionist kind, i can't resist critisising bits.
The main thing i dont like about it is the mountain infront of the base, what is its purpose exactly? Oh, and the Generator room needs to be... well more generator like (like in broadside/scarabrae if that's possible)
But apart from that, it rocks.
In regards to Ingolifs
by EEPROM on June 18, 2002 Permalink · Rating:In regards to Ingolifs Question, why the mountain in front of the main base? (mostly directed toward the hanger aria). The answer is simple. One night a friend and I were testing out this map. I was on one side/team and he was on the other. All we did the whole night for several hours is build Shrikes and kamikaze into each other’s hanger. It was so easy too. Build the Shrike and press the forward button. Too easy if you ask me. However, I do remember the days of Scarabrae and how kamikaze runs into that hanger helped slow down the enemy air attacks, so I did not want to eliminate this tactic completely. So, I built up those mountains in an attempt to make what was easy not so easy. In return what I got was not just an obstacle for any Shrike kamikaze run but also a nice perch for defensive players. It also makes a nice resting spot for offensive players as they cross the deep blue.
