Capture the Flag Other Clear Client Side Night
The map custom made for UVALAN 3, "Erebus" is a uniquely terrained map that combines the game mechanics of Desiccator and the fast-paced gameplay of Katabatic. It's been spiffed up and polished a bit since UVALAN for improved gameplay.
And, hey, with a name like Meddish, it has to be good :-)

You wont be able to play the new map. Least, in my case.
Good skiing and a large portion of death in the center. Forcefield gens have a bunker right above them, good for campin or hiding stations. Ice over lava effect is nice too. Good map in general.

by DarkFame on July 25, 2001 Permalink · Rating:Great map. I liked the concept of this map. :) The particle emitters on the vehicle wrecks is some nice little details, but added atmosphere. And the overall atmosphere and feeling in this map is good. Some meteors arriving here and there etc. The placement of the FF gens makes the action spread around on the map, using all it's terrain. The only "bad" thing about it (thus Dynamix's fault) is that's it's client side. It's great on a LAN as it's easy to distribute. But Online it's a bit worse. Anyways.. Wish I could be on that UVALAN. Would just be a 8+ hours planetrip and I'm there. hehe :-D And for you last last.. I don't really know about that one. What's so artistic about it? ;)

That said, this is a great map. It's very straightforward - just as advertised, it's a little bit of Desiccator and a little bit of Katabatic. And a whole lot of lava.
Too bad we don't have auto-downloads. :)

by Fu$iL on July 25, 2001 Permalink · Rating:Wow! This map really is a good combination nullifiing the few weaknesses of dessiccator and katabatic for a very good gameplay experience :). just the gens are a BIT too easy to destroy imo but this is not really bad for this map and even adds a bit to the fast paced gameplay .)

by Subnubilus on July 26, 2001 Permalink · Rating:I hate to break the chain of A's, so I added a plus to the grade, but I can't say that I think it earns an A. The terrain SHAPE and skiing is great, the fast pace of the map is great, the ony gameplay problem is the fact that the flag will be un-forcefielded most of the time, rather than less of the time. But maybe that was intended, so I'll give you the benifit of the doubt. So the gameplay is fine. My gripe comes with the look. I realize what Erebus is, so I will agree you can put the lava and ice together. But the way you put it in, it doesnt look right. Snow and lava often overlaps, sometimes lava pits are touching fully solid snow (as opposed to melting), and the lava areas/snow areas are logically placed. It COULD have looked right but as of now it looks very bad because of the way they are mixed. They can be mixed to look more... right... i assure you. Also, reflections are blue, but the brightest nearby luminescent objects are red, as is the fog, and it looks wrong. And the biggest visual problem of all, which is present in many of the official maps and many custom maps is this- the fog in the distance affects the color of the ground and objects, but NOT the sky, so it ends up where the horizon is bright red from fog while the sky is completely clear. That's impossible and looks very, very unrealistic. An example is in one of the screen shots, you can see the mountains are glowing orange but the sky beside it is clear. And yes, this can be fixed. I love some of your maps Meddish, and I like the gameplay on this one, but the truth, in my opinion, is that this map has nothing special to offer, and the same fast paced gameplay can be found on nicer looking maps.

by DarkFame on July 26, 2001 Permalink · Rating:I just want to tell Subnubilus that you are way too picky. I didn't even notice those details you mentioned there. And grading the map by that? Not fair. Look at the other A's, you must be wrong. :) No hard feelings, Subnubilus.

by Star on July 27, 2001 Permalink · Rating:I didn't look at this map, but imho, I never grade a map solely on looks. I know you took the gameplay into account but you made the map sound like it's an eyesore. It could be the ugliest map in the world and I'd still play on it enough to figure out if the gameplay is good. Also, if it is ugly enough, I'll give it some points for being original =)

by Star on July 31, 2001 Permalink · Rating:Well the pickup game with this map was interesting. PJ's team had the lead at first but quickly fell to my capping skillz. I thought the FF went up and down randomly at first, but of course I also thought PJ had more sense than to camp ;x I actually thought the terrain looked rather pretty although I don't like how to can spam the FF gen tower from hills.
I played this at UVALAN3
by NecroBones on August 4, 2001 Permalink · Rating:I played this at UVALAN3 along with everyone else. My opinions of it haven't changed since then. The map is 'OK', hence the 'C' grade. Here were my impressions of the map (and I don't usually critique other people's maps)-- I felt that the map just didn't "feel right". Most of the people I talked to at UVALAN3 didn't like the map at all. I found the gameplay frustrating, but passable. The look is strange, since the combination of snow and magma doesn't quite seem to fit, and the orange fog was rough on the eyes and didn't look right against a black sky. The fact that the flag is behind GREEN forcefields means that the FF gens are a necessary objective, and since they're in one little tower you tend to have a situation where one team's gen stays down, and the other's stays up for most of the mission. It would have been better to make them orange FF's so that it would be a USEFUL objective, but not 100\% absolutely necessary. Cappers who would try to get the flag with the gens up would get stuck in a "fly-paper" sort of fashion, but the flag would still be reachable. Generally speaking it's a passable map, isn't too resource-hungry, and doesn't have any obvious/extreme flaws/problems, but personally I consider it to be on par with my least favorites of the base maps, and I wasn't the only one who found it frustrating and ugly at UVALAN3.

by Crolis on August 4, 2001 Permalink · Rating:I had a chance to see this map first hand at UVALAN3 and my first impression was that it did not live up to the hype that was surrounding it. Firstly, the environment suffered from lack of tweaking, with the ambient lighting and sky looking a rather sickly shade of orange and not fading properly. I've seen much better from third party mappers. Secondly, I felt that the base placement and choice limited the map to smaller players even though the distances between both bases suggested larger teams. The map to me has an unfinished appearance and should be taken back to the drawing board for much needed tweaking. If you want a decent map to put on your server, I'd suggest looking at maps from NecroBones or EEPROM, at least they have a attention to detail creates a much better experience.
The new positions of the gens
by Sir Lucius on August 4, 2001 Permalink · Rating:The new positions of the gens are great. I've played on the new version and the ver at UVA3 and the new version is MUCH better. The gens are down more leaving the falg open which is a GOOD thing. There are a lot of turrts, but there are good enough ski routes that it is posible to get away with the flag. Just be thankful it's not another recalescene.
