Review of Map: Warlords Wasteland by DrPimento on February 8, 2003

Playability: 85 Detail: 98 Balance: 95 Placement: 90 Mechanics: 90

Of course, I'm refering to EEPROM when I say "master", as he truly is pretty much the undisputed "king of custom". The one and only thing that stands out about this map for a bit is the base structure. It's huge. It's massive, and forbidding, and it's easy to get lost in. It has guttering torches, a dungeon, subterranian passages, high towers for outlook, lofty ceilings and low arches. In short, download the map for yourself, and just spend the rest of your life wandering through it. You'll never cease to be amazed at every next turn that shows up.

Unfortunately, the map isn't able to play half as well as the base is constructed. The sky is very, very impressive, and the terrain is as well. You can see at once that a lot of time was put into texturing the ground, and crafting the hills to mold around the base itself. But anytime you look near the base.. the lag-monster strikes. This isn't a "your computer is old" issue: I have a very new machine, and was still getting major problems. Look away, and the stickiness flees with the sight of the structures. Back you gaze, and immediently you're crawling on the floor of frames-per-second.

This aside, the flag shouldn't be too hard to get.. depending on how you go about it. Rear entry is the way to go; although you have further to trek once inside the base, you won't have to contend with the three base turrets out front. (Mortar barrels make it especially hard) And once you memorize the base, you could easily lose those poor newbs in your wake.

Playability is low because of the lag problem. It really makes even base defense a real chore.

Attention to Detail is phenominal. It manifests itself in the base construction, item placement (check out the dungeons!), and terrain. Coulda used some organics near the midfield.. and some eye-candy. But hey.. what are you going to do?

Balance goes just a tad to the defense. The flag room has lots of spots for spider clamps, and a singe Jug defender could really cause problems for a flag-capper.

Item Placement is really great as well. (again.. check out the dungeon) The inventories are a tad sparse, but nothing worth really complaining about.

Mechanics had to be dropped just a bit, because (and I say this one last time) no one on the map could truly play it "up to speed".

In ending: I'm not sure if the lag thing could be resolved (through base/portal reconstruction, or whatnot) but if it ever is.. look out for this map to take players by storm. I love it already, and I hardly was able to play! Please, download it.. just walk around by yourself, and marvel... it's worth it all.
