Capture the Flag Desert Clear Client Side Custom Shapes

This map is intended to be an exact clone of Rollercoaster from Tribes. It includes custom base shapes built to the exact scale of the originals from Tribes. It also includes authentic terrain from the original. The terrain is exact in almost every way as it was ripped from the Tribes terrain itself. All the great ski routes of Rollercoaster are preserved in T2Rollercoaster. Even the locations of the bases and objects are as close to the originals as possible. On my website I have posted side-by-side pictures of Rollercoaster vs. T2Rollercoaster. Check them out at http://www.aylamation.com/tribes/rollercoaster.html. I was intending to recreate all the good maps from Tribes (Broadside/Blastside, IceRidge, RainDance, etc), but it seems that there are a lot of people out there with the same idea. I am hoping that this faithful reproduction of Rollercoaster, with its exact terrain and shapes, will be set apart from the crowd. Enjoy the map and feel free to drop me a line with any thoughts or comments to [email protected].

I played it and it brought a little tear to my eye to be back in my homeland where I first popped my cherry..oops. But how long did it take you to make this dude? The base is bitchen' and the land is just like it was in T1. /me gives him a cookie

This map is perfect, and I mean PERFECT!!!!!! The terrain is absolutly flawless, every ridge, every path, every mountain is there. The bases are an exact match. I have been looking for a perfect T2 Rollercoaster, and I have found it. Wonderball, GREAT JOB on this map, and I hope to see a lot more out there from you.

Wow...I'm speechless. Nice job.

T1 Map Revivalists could probably use you...ask Nefilim about it. In the not-too-distant future, we'll be releasing (don't ask me about release dates) several T1 remakes. The ones I know of are Scarabrae, Rollercoaster, Broadside/Blastside, Raindance, and DangerousCrossing. We could really use your help if you're that good.

Put this on my server last night and it kicks ass. Everyone was having a blast. Instant hit. Your recreation is perfect. Same attack paterns, same D strategies. This fricken ROCKS!!! Damn fine work. Keep it up. Now how about a real "Broadside".

First off: good job at getting everything exactly the same.
Now for why I gave this a B instead of an A+:
As nice as it is to see everything replicated exactly as it was in T1, I really have to question why anyone would want the terrain to be 100\% EXACTLY the same as it was in the original Rollercoaster...As nice as it was, I think people got bored of the same old ski routes a long time ago, and even a slight variation would've been nice. In fact, it would've kept people on their toes and added a new dimension to the gameplay.
As for the interiors....admirable job at getting them to have EXACTLY the same dimensions as the originals, but once again, I have to ask why? They are of rather low quality, with minimal detail (and what detail does exist is ripped straight from the original Rollercoaster...) but fortunately still entirely functional. The inside of the base I found particularily hard on the eyes....Some diff. textues in there would've been nice.

Okay, now while I may have been sounding jaded and bitter and yatti yatti throughout this review it's only because I don't understand why anyone would want a perfect carbon copy of a map from T1 in T2. In recreating it exactly it loses some of its quality because the map was optimized for the original Starsiege: Tribes. Even some very small tinge of originality here or there in the base structure or terrain or whatnot would've bumped the grade up considerably, but all you did was rip this straight from T1...
Regardless it's still a fun map, I just would've greatly preferred to see a T2-ized version of it.

Hrmm, great a perfect recreation of Rollercoaster. Like v5planet said, its fun. But, its more of a map editor A+ than a mapping A+. Took an old map, and remade it for a diff game. Great. But I'd rather play T1 and get the same, if not better experience. I wish you'd created some more ski routes, and really, spiced up the textures. Using the T2 engine, RC can really be something special.

In response to v5planet:
I understand what you are saying and your grade is your opinion, and I am glad to hear anyone's opinion. My goal was not to create a T2-ized version of Rollercoaster - I have seen too many of those. My intention was, as you suggest, to make a carbon-copy of the original. As for why bother making a carbon-copy? I don't know, I just wanted to see if I could do it. Rollercoaster was my favorite mission of T1 and I wished that I could play it in T2. This was not meant to be an exercise in creativity, it was more of an exercise in technology. I didn't want any "small tinge of originality here or there" as this was not my intent. My originality came in the tools that I wrote to accomplish this exact replica. Anyway thanks for the opinion!

Excelent re-creation. However, where is the creativity? Two reasons why I never did any re-creations of Tribes 1 maps without making them Tribes 2 style. One is, unless it looks exactly like the original you will get slammed. Unlike this map, most re-creations look nothing like the original. Second reason, old news baby thats been done, and done again. Don't worry about it though, I got slammed over and over again when I re-created DC for Tribes 2. Look nothing like the original I guess.

I tend to agree with the others. This is a great exact replica of the original Rollercoaster. Unfortunately, T2 is a different game, and despite this map being entirely identical to the original it will not play anything like it. Why? Because the vehicles in T2 are actually useful...this remade version of RC will be all about Shrike capping and escorting with maybe a few foot caps thrown in here and there. Then again I could be wrong, since taking the power out is so easy... Also keep in mind the turrets can now be changed and the ELF is also a useful turret now that actually DOES SOMETHING. For all those reasons T2RC will still play totally different than the original. I don't know, I appreciate the effort and I'll give you an A in your ingenuity in recreating the original so exactly, but in terms of actual mapping I can only give you a B. I personally would much prefer a T2ized version of Rollercoaster, adjusted to take into account the difference in gameplay. Anyway good job on the exact conversion, and I look forward to seeing your work in the future.

Well, nice job on the terrain, Im still very curious as to how you ripped the terrain from T1. The bases however, look quite ugly IMO, they are the same shape as the T1 counterparts, but the lack of detail and lighting make them kind of an eyesore. And as EEPROM mentioned, just because it is structured exactly like T1, doesnt mean it will play anything like it, after all, the physics and overall pace of T2 is much different. Vehicles should play a large role in any T2 maps that have V-pads IMO, and the very short distance makes them all but useless. I have been busy (with the help of a few others) recreating all the CTF maps from T1 to T2, and when I started, I contemplated making them exactly like T1... But then after playtesting a few, and playing T2 alot more, i realized that it wasnt really such a great idea, T2 is a whole new beast, and what worked in T1 wont necassarily work in T2. In mine, I tried to bring back the nostalgic feel of the T1 maps, but including all the kinds of things that make T2 such a great game. But, this isnt about my maps, its about your map ;-) I gave you a B-, because you obviously took alot of time remaking this map, and for your first venture into WorldCraft, you did well. But the lack of detail on the interiors, and the dull lighting and terrain textures just look kind of stale. You didnt use any interior lighting it seems like, the bases look fullbright inside and out. And a more diverse use of textures would have added to it tremendously. Overall, its a good attempt at recreating a great map, but if I want to play the SAME map exactly, I will play T1.

I"m with nefilim. you should use your own textures or some ones from T2 cause I got tired of some of those old 8-bit T1 textures fast

ignore my last post. I was a little confused by something else I heard. I'll just give it a D+ cause of the bad texturing job

GREAT MAP!! Back in the day when the map editor just came out I made the other Rollercoaster remake. It was harder than crap. All the bad reviews I got were from people complaining that it wasn't "enough alike" and that "all the old ski routes are gone" and now that this one is done perfectly you all bash it for being too alike... So I've come to the conclusion that -
It's physically impossible to please a majority of Tribes 1 Players with a T2 Remake of a classic map. Just look at the evidence. I think it's great though. Awesome job.

by JGB on May 14, 2002 · Rating:

That is because guys like Nefilim and Uranium are jealous of real skill, they are threatened by it. They bash your map because they think more people will download their maps. I love how hipocritcal they are, they bash a map for being too much alike, then make an replica map and try to get it as close as possible. Well all I have to say is good luck getting a terrain as perfect as this. Once again, great job on this map, I love all my old ski routes.

I agree with Wicked. No matter what you did, it was enevitable that some were gonna be critical of your effort.

Ummmm....Why diss NEFILM? I believe that he works for the DEV team and that he is a professional mapmaker. I believe that your jealious because he gets paid to make maps and is pritty damn good at it while the maker of this version is using the old textures from T1. Watch your comments and kinda figure out who someone is before dissing them.
