Capture the Flag Desert Clear Client Side Custom Textures Custom Shapes

This is my attempt at recreating one of my favorite Tribes maps into a Tribes 2 map. It is not meant to be an exact duplicate of the original, your old ski routes from T1 probably wont work, but you can find many new ones. The flags are close together so it provides some fast and furious action.

This map is scripted so that you cannot change turret barrels on base turrets, and the sentry turrets do a little bit less damage than usual. This was done to recreate the same kind of gameplay that was found in Tribes 1. An unscripted version is also available in the vl2 file. The file minivehiclestation.cs is used for the half-sized vehicle pads in the map.

Thanks to Sparky and Zear for the map scripting!

/\/\ike - this is not your personal opinion board. Do not grade maps based on your feelings about the game in general. I changed your grade to "None". Sigh.

Why are these stupid Tribes 1 maps always in the top 10 rank? Starsiege Tribes has nothing that Tribes 2 hasn't beaten. That, and why do they make maps for T2 if they say T1 is better? Personally, I think that the special education classes should have more members. Ohh...and does ANYONE know what Shazbot means? I have asked a lot of T2 players...and they all say...umm...no clue.

Ha! First! I can't be the only one who liked this map in T1! So, you guys are doing all of the T2 CTF maps, right?

Ive seen alot of Roller Coasters, but this one takes the cake, custom buildings, great sky etc, what more to say but it is NICE!

by Nefilim on November 20, 2001 · Rating:

I cant take all the credit for the sky in this one... i just recolored the sky from Trident ;) Did the job very well tho imo.

Well, I love this map just like all the others. There is something that keeps this level from an A+, and that is the playability. This is much much easier to cap on than the original. You can easily avoid any turret fire when grabbing the flag. But, other than that, this map really is extremely well done and I applaud it. The playability issue is one that possibly couldn't have been avoided, so I kind of understand. Excellent job!

I'm really kinda disappointed. With all the slams that I got from you guys on my map (T2Rollercoaster) about it not being "T2-ized" - I was expecting a map that would combine the essence of T1 Rollercoaster with the gameplay of T2. This map does not accomplish that goal. In fact it is not "T2-ized" in any way, the terrain and distances are roughly the same as T1. It is even made more like T1 by disallowing the changing of turret barrels. When you told me your map was going to be optimized for the playability of T2, I really expected more out of it. -- late!

I totally disagree w/ the guy who says that this map is not good. I like the fact that they are so much like the orignal T1 maps.

by AdroNesn on November 23, 2001 · Rating:

Thank god (Dynamix) for improved Elf turrets. In this map, they actually do what they were supposed to do in T1. I love this map. It looks and feels GREAT! The terrain is just bumpy enough to be both superfast (for the initiated) and superannoying (for the newbies). The custom interiors are excellent, textures and all. I can't say anything about the playability, cuz I haven't played it with anyone yet.

I love how you slammed another rollercoaster map, because it wasn't t2ized. But now I see that you are just a hypocrite. What are you thinking - if you put a cactus in there it is t2ized? As far as the map is concerned, i give you credit with the custom textures, but you FAIL in comparison on the terrain to other rollercoaster maps. Nice try, but you should of cut a deal with the guys who makes the terrains perfect. Also whats up with the bridge that connects the flag with the base, you spent a lot of time on textures and stuff and you put that eye sore in there. This is what upsets me and I want the t2 mappers to read this. This is nefilim's own words in what I think is one of the better T1 recreations "In mine, I tried to bring back the nostalgic feel of the T1 maps, but including all the kinds of things that make T2 such a great game", so what exactly are these great things that you added. I hope you are not talking about the cactus.

Someone sounds bitter ;) You are entitled to your own opinion of course, but when I commented on my maps being T2-ized, I wasnt talking specifically about THIS map and this map only. Perhaps I should have worded it better so as not to confuse the readers. What I meant was, this being the sequel to Tribes, a remake should look BETTER than the original, which the one I commented about did not. And no, the terrain is not exactly the same as the T1 terrain... because where is the originality in that? It does take talent to write a program to rip the terrain from T1, but absolutely NO creativity. If you want to play the exact same thing, play T1. I in no way "slammed" ANYONE for anything. In fact, I think I gave the author of the other Rollercoaster map a B+. I just offered some constructive critisism. By the wording in your review JGB, the D+ sounds like your slamming me purely on the basis of your own misguided indignation. As far as T2-izing the map... what exactly would I have done to it? The beauty of Rollercoaster is its simplicity. But yes, the random organics, and the fact that my maps make use of the enhanced graphic engine in T2 to make the map look better than it's T1 counterpart make it T2-ized. As far as gameplay goes, this is what I felt Rollerocaster for T2 should be played like. That meant not changing much of anything, keeping the bases close together, etc. But, unlike in T1, the vehicles actually have a place in the map now. And as for your comment about the bridge... your just grasping for straws now. Why build a new one when there is a perfectly fine one included with T2 that serves the purpose just fine? Why not mention the turret platforms too? Those are also an "eyesore" being that Dynamix made them too...

by Alundra on November 23, 2001 · Rating:

lol I hope JBG was joking cause it takes a long time to work on worldcraft, and sky textures, but defenatly pays off by the newness of the base, JBG whats with the D+ I meen I would only give that grade to a poor done map like umm Broad Side, its better to have a new base then use the overly used caldera base that looks nothing like T1. But I would have to say that the bridge is kinda outa place, what you should of done it put the both bases into one file and have a more appropriate bridge in between, like a plain gray type thing. Still I wouldn't want to go to the trouble to work with that. Anyways job well done once again.

The best of your |Classics| maps. Graded on playibility alone, it is an A+. Turrets are perfectly positioned and well-balanced in power. The only things I wished were different was that the bridge be a little longer (like 1.3x what it is now) and the ridgeline on the far side of the flag (opposite nme base) lowered just a touch (allowing under-shriking, a tactic I would like to see made available in at least one good map, sigh).
Great job Nefilim.

Three things:
1) I usually don't grade maps, but I'll make an exception for this. This map is simply godlike.
2) The true reason I rated was to balance out the D+ grade given by a llama.
3) No offense, but I don't think that Tasluk, the reviewer who chose it for MOTW, played this map. "An elf and a plasma turret is what initially begins but expect those turrets to be quickly changed out for the more powerful AA or missle turrets." It is not possible to change the turrets. Tasluk, you may want to research the map before making it the MOTW...although this one definitely deserves it.

Well Red, in all fairness, there IS an unscripted version included that allows for turret barrel swapping, so if you were playing that version then you would expect the Elf turret to get replaced fairly quick.

Outstanding map. I loved this map; it truely shows that T1 maps can be rebuilt using T2 engines. I can see he took a great deal of time making this map. To the commet on the terrain, im sorry but you cant make identical terrain. Id like to see the person who gave this a D+ make this map. He took every detail and put it into this map and then some. He truely desirves recogniation for this map and is probley one of the best T1 mappers out there. I only have 1 request is that you make arena maps to.

This map, by far is the closest map to tribes 1. It has everything from the base with open flag, to the hills between the teams. I can tell you put in a lot of effort for this map. Its almost like your playing tribes 1. If it was possible to give a better mark i would. Great work on a great map!

I like it but every time on there really isnt that many peeps on that map maybe when more servers review this it might be on every server

I think this map has been very well done, however I'm dissappointed in the hypecriticalness of some of those commenting here that also commented on Wonderball's version. Personnally if I wanted to play RollerCoaster in Tribes2 I'd have to deffinitly go with Wonderball's version but this one is better looking as way of maps for T2 go.

to /\/\ike below:

The reason why people like the origional levels is:
firstly, the maps that came with tribes2 were alot different to the tribes1 maps, mainly small bunkers and fogged up cesspits. Tribes1 generally had a far line of sight and huge, spectacular floating bases.
lastly, everyone succumbs to Nostalgia. Even if something was crap, its nice we remember it and the memories that went along with it

Shazbot. its a word from planet Ork. (from some ancient sitcom)
It means sh!t, but they couldn't really use sh!t so they used Shazbot

oh and the map looks good too

by evelas on April 12, 2003 · Rating:

I take it the comment around 2-3 below me is talking about T1 when he says cesspits =p. I played the game for a bit and quit it when I tried to ski in it.
